9:45 Site Maintenance
Thanks to Mr. Herr -> the L drive has returned!
So we need to go over how this will adjust when work is due, to get us back on track.
Week 8 was going to be due last Tuesday at 3pm. This was going to be the final work of the 1st quarter. Due to the L drive issue Week 8 will now be the 1st week of our 2nd quarter, and due tomorrow at 3pm.
Week 9 (what we did last week) will be due a day later than normal this week (Wednesday at 3pm) due to the readjusted schedule. Week 9 work is due Wednesday at 3pm.
Both Week 8 and Week 9 will now be considered part of the 2nd quarter. All first quarter work needs to be turned in tomorrow by lunch! Nothing new is going to be due for the 1st quarter, but if you have any late work, or partial projects you want credit for (instead of 0′s) you need to get this work in by tomorrow at noon. (in late folder and paper note in bin)
I realize that it will take us some time to get back up to speed with our normal grading and schedule. We will have site maintenance today and tomorrow morning to get everyone back up to speed.
In summation:
- 1st quarter work must be in tomorrow by noon in late folder + note in bin. This is priority #1 -> after Tuesday at noon these grades are set in stone. You will get 1st quarter grade-sheets this morning.
- Week 8 work due Tuesday at 3pm (start of our 2nd quarter grading). You will get 2nd quarter grade sheets Tuesday morning.
- Week 9 work due Wednesday at 3pm (a day late to help you out a bit)
For speed and efficency, I am going to have our normal Monday meetings pushed back to Tuesday morning. Tomorrow we will start dealing with 2nd quarter grading, both work product and behavior from last week. Today we concentrate on wrapping up Q1.

12:25 Attendance and Article
12:25 Quiet Production Time
12:50 Afternoons this week will be focused on Static Mesh Modeling for an upcoming Ancient Greek Themed MMORPG.
12:50 Monday / Wednesday Afternoon Environmental Modeling Assignment: Parthenon.
You and a partner are going to be working on a team project. You are working for a game company which is making a immerse 3D World for an upcoming Greek themed MMORPG, think World of Warcraft but based in Athens. You will be creating a “static mesh” which can easily be imported into UDK (Unreal Development Kit) to be used in a Video Game. This will mimic the workflow found in the game design industry.
Your larger team (think 20 people) is charged with creating the Acropolis of Athens:
Think of the above world as a level, where you can explore everything, the different buildings, levels, etc.
You and your partner are specifically assigned to create the Parthenon component for the larger team.
You and your partner will be creating the Parthenon in the height of the ancient Greeks, not broken down. When working on projects that aren’t current, you are going to have to go from historical / artists impressions of the structure at its apogee. You can also use images that show its general structure in current form to get a rough idea of its structure.
This is the first project in which you are required to use the Net Render for completion. We will learn how to use this tomorrow.
For grading you and your partner will not turn in still frames, but a movie that shows off your work. The requirements for the movie are:
- shown from a low angel looking up as if viewed from the height of a human
- use at least 1 animated camera
- focus on very slow animation. Do not race your camera around your creation. If you want to show different angles use multiple rendered sequences. They key is slow. Show off your work – > don’t make the user sick. I am happy to look at your group timing before you submit to give you an thumbs up or down.
As we will use the net render for this assignment, amount of frames will make less of a difference as they will be rendered overnight.
When complete upload your video showing off what you and your partner created as “parthenon.mp4″ into Week 10. Include both partners names in the title screen.
Teams of two will have to break down who wants to make what component. There are some areas that you may choose to use a texture for detail, and others where you want to model the detail. You and your partner have two afternoons to do the best job.
Half of class will pick their partner, the other class gets picked.
Order of picking:
- Groff
- Hillis
- Lincoln
- Megan
- Tommy
- Alger
- Whitehouse
Pick from:
- Chambers
- Chapin
- Decker
- Giannuzzi
- Hale
- Corey
- Sawyer
Use the public drive to save copies of your work back and forth amongst your team.
After groups created get to work quietly with your partner. How are you going to successfully complete the project? Maybe you work on one computer for a bit? Maybe you divy up work and work separately?
2:05 Dismissal
