12:50 Monday Afternoon Max Project: Pop Neon
Today you are going to work with Mental Ray Glow Materials to create a render demonstrating your ability to create, control and modify glowing materials and signage. In addition to practicing mental ray materials, you will need to model 3 different types of objects using shapes – both text and the line tool:
- Pizza Parlor Neon Sign
- Find a font which works, I think something italic works best
- Classic “Open” Sign
- As this signs font has no area (its just lines) you will need to create this using the shapes tab. Your work must mimic the classic sign found above.
- Alien head
- Replicate the “classic” alien head.
For this assignment we will bend the truth a little and not physically connect the signage to the walls. This is ok.
You will spend more time editing the vertex points (corner vs smooth vs bezier vs bezier handle) than creating the objects (I did). The point editing you will practice today will transfer perfectly into Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, or any other graphics program where editing of curves is important.
I placed in front of a wall and used an Architectural and Design material for the wall material, set to masonry. I also created a directional light without shadows pointed at the wall. I set my multiplier to .05 with a color of very very dark grey to lower the overall light level. Your settings may be different, but use mine as a jumping off point.
When complete create a single render called “neonSigns.jpg” at 1280 x 720 and upload to your Week 12 folder.
2:05 Dismissal
