1:30 Monday / Wednesday Afternoon Animation Exercise:  Tread Based Object

This week the afternoons will be dedicated to the modeling, texturing, and animation a tread based object.

This project will let you test your skills at mimicking reality through creation of something real, that actually exists such as:

or .

You could also test your skills at creating something that is could exist such as:

or .

Or you can go in a more creative direction and come up with your own idea of an object that moves with treads. Could you make a dining room table on treads?  Sure.  Tank tread aquarium?  Why not.  Tread based Lazy Boy Chair?  Ok.  Turntables and stage mounted on treads for outdoor parties.  Anything.  Have fun with the topic, go crazy.

Some examples from last year:

Riley

Jackson

Others

Regardless of what you create, you will create and animate it in 3D Studio.

If you can think of a good use to use an animated path deform modifier, than you can go in that direction.  An example I can think of is setting up a series of conveyor belts which seem to go in every direction with boxes flying this way and that way – think of Toy Story 2.

By Wednesday EOD you are going to turn in to your Week 13 folder:

  • 3 renders at 1280 x 720 called “tread1.jpg” through “tread3.jpg”
  • 1 animation (with 5 second lead) called “tread.mp4″ of your object driving across a white plane with appropriate sound.
  • For a letter grade extra credit:  Your animation must include the following requirements:
    • Low Angle of object almost running over the camera
    • 3/4 View of object driving toward camera
    • 3/4 View of object driving away from camera
    • This animation must include sound.  In the shots where your object comes closer to the camera, the audio must get louder as it approaches, as in our student examples.  If you have a shot where your object moves away from the camera, the volume should get quieter

All elements for extra credit must be present in order to earn the bonus points.

Remember, there is NO scene for this, concentrate on the modeling/texturing/animating of your specific object.

Students here both afternoons will get Monday through Thursday to work on the tread based object project.
