10:05 Design Homework 23 | Waterfall

Above is “Waterfall” by Dutch artist M.C.Escher, first printed in October 1961. It shows a physically impossible perpetual motion machine where water from the base of a waterfall appears to run downhill along the water path before reaching the top of the waterfall.

In Design Homework 23 you are going to do one of two sketches based on your designer preference.  In one option you are a monkey copying others work and get a maximum grade of a B.  In the other option you engage the lobe of your brain that controls creativity and are eligible for the A.

Option 1.  Don’t reinvent the wheel.  You are a Monkey.

Replicate the sketch above.  The focus should be on the physically impossible drawing of the waterfall loop.

Will the work you create be as good as one of the most prolific artists if the history of humanity?

Probably not.

Try your best, don’t get hung up trying to mimic his work perfectly.

Maximum grade of a B.

Option 2.  You are creative. Reinvent the wheel.

Create and sketch your own looping system which powers a water wheel, but is physically impossible.

Eligible for the A.

Sign and date, due 1 week from today.

Give me your sketchbooks with DH 22  | The Curve before you go to break!

11:05 Morning Web Content:  Intro to Javascript

  • What is Javascript?
  • JS is the final component to the Front End Web Dev Trinity:
    • html5 for structure
    • css for presentation
    • js for interactivity
  • Javascript is the same as Java right?  RIGHT?
  • Allows the browser to be your programming environment.  Everyone has a browser!
  • Let’s play and explore, break stuff, etc.

12:00 Lunch (30 Minutes)

12:30 Attendance and Article

12:35 Quiet Production Time

12:45 Creative Commons

  • What does this offer designers?  How does this impact my life?
  • How can we use websites such as Flickr as tool to obtain images to use, adapt, remix, and even sell?
  • How this is best practice as young designers.  Doing what is right vs. stealing.
  • Quick review on setting up masks in Photoshop for non-destructive editing.
  • Destructive editing.
  • Forcing an adjustment to be on a single layer.
  • Playing with filters to affect only a single layer to best merge the visuals together.

1:25 Afternoon Creative Commons sourced Photoshop Collage Project

We are going to use a random topic generator on the fly in front of the class.  You will receive 3 prompts.  I am writing down your specific prompts, everyone will be different.  Combine these prompts together into a Photoshop Collage, style of your choosing.

Using the Creative Commons filter on Flickr you are going to build a Photoshop composition at 8.5 x 11 inches in Photoshop at a resolution of 72.  As we are not going to print this, we are going to use a lower resolution for lower file size, quicker loading, etc.

As the end of this project you are going to have something filled with digital content you did not create, yet with full rights to sell it for profit without sharing any of the earnings.   Everything is legal.

Name your file “tuesdayComposition.jpg” and upload to your Week 23 folder.
