Monday, February 20th

Class hours: 9:40am – 2:05pm
Mr. Cronin
Mr. Moore

  • Welcome to Week 24!
  • Reid and Colton today you and you two ALONE decide what Cawd does this Friday.  Quiz happening today at 10:10 for you during SM.
  • Doors locked immediately after school as normal for Monday.
  • Tomorrow we have two visitors coming who were in Pre-tech last year, Dresden and Danny.  They will be with us for an hour.  Thursday we have Mrs. Wolfe’s entire class coming in to visit!  More on that tomorrow.
  • We will either have a Google 20% this week Wednesday & Thursday afternoon (if Game Day), or Thursday & Friday afternoon (if no Game Day).  Start planning.
  • Game Design teams make sure you are playable by Wednesday, as Thursday morning we are going to be having Alpha Game State Testing and constructive criticism.
  • Wednesday from 10-11 we have the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey.
  • Students that have been having the ghost of updating your CSS / JS and then it “not updating” in the browser until we do some special tricks, try this out.  If you hit command + r it will refresh the page as normal.  If you hit command + shift + r you will “Force refresh without the local browser cache” which is the short term browsers memory causing the problems.  Try this out, let me know if it works.  I have another trick up my sleeve if this isn’t a perfect solution.

  • Depending on what Colton and Reid do today at 10:10 we will either have no quiz and a Game Day on Friday, or a review quiz on Friday from the Week 23 Vocab and Terminology.  Encourage them to study, and spin through the extra credit options.
  • All students that wish to take part on Friday (if we have a game day) must be fully caught up in Cawd work.  If you are missing assignments you will have to work Friday to get caught up.  Just turn all your work in!

12:45 Monday / Tuesday Afternoon Website Version #2.

Today and Tuesday afternoon we are going to revise our websites.  We are going to use a style guide to help us create something a little less free form, and a little more professional and consistent.

“A style guide (or manual of style) is a set of standards for the writing and design of documents, either for general use or for a specific publication, organization, or field. (It is often called a style sheet, though that term has other meanings.) A style guide establishes and enforces style to improve communication.”

First, let’s spin through Champlain College’s Style Guide.  Let’s see how specific they are, and how they are organized.

Next, lets look at our “V2 Styleguide” for your Website Revision.  This will drive the style.

In terms of of technical specifics:

  • Valid html5
  • External css and js
  • Use of image gallery with at least 6 of your best projects rotating through a gallery on your page right below your Master Logo.  Each image the same size – you choose the size.
  • Use of headings, lists, and paragraphs – organize your content in a logical way.
  • Web Dev students have a “Web Dev” section just as you would “First Semester”, “Second Semester”, etc.  This should link to your “webDev” folder.
  • Include a section toward the bottom with the color palette image and link to the live palette.  It is a nice way to connect your project to something real, and not just a selection of random colors.  It helps show intent in your design choices.

Finally, all coding content must be created by you.  Nothing extraneous beyond the specifics for this assignment. No nav.  No dead links.  A simple, clean, attractive way to manage your work.

Step 1 – Logo Brainstorming

The first step is going to be brainstorming of visual branding for you.  Grab a sheet of paper and create 5 different simple illustrations which connect to you in some way.  Think back to the Dropbox visual – a box to put something in.  Something simple that could be included with your name text if you wish.  This first step is graded on the fly pass / fail.  Raise your hand, get checked off, and move on to the website revision.
