Notes

  • Welcome to Week 29!
  • This is the 2nd of two weeks in Cawd which are the most strange.  This week the name of the game is preparing for Design Competitions on Wednesday, getting ready to compete, pitch, and put some accolades on your resume and in your Portfolio.
  • As an extra treat Gold Medal winners in Game / Web / Animation will get to choose their 4th quarter seats after the top 3 grades choose.  We have learned that there is at least one more school competing in 3D Animation, and one more school competing in Game Design.
  • No vocab / no quiz this week.
  • Unless you are in a design competition on Wednesday, Cawd and Cawd2 are closed until 9:30 AM.  Have a plan.
  • No dailies until Thursday.

9:40 Attendance

9:45 Design Homework 29 | Envelope Study

Design Homework 29 we be themed to work on an envelope themed design.  What goes on it?  Anything. It really is a blank slate in terms of the design.  You could go:

  • Pop culture themed
  • Abstract
  • Typographic

** The only design style I do not want is random, unconnected doodles.  If you are going to draw random versions of a pineapple – acceptable.  I just want to stay away from 100% random sketches.

Front and back will be graded.

In a variation of the theme we are going to require that you include a “to” and a “from” address.

The “to” address (the center of the front, where the letter is going) will be your address.  If you are uncomfortable using you address use:

Pixar Animation Studios

1200 Park Avenue

Emeryville, California 94608

The “from” address (the top left of the front) will be Cawd’s address:

Cawd @ CTE

3 Educational Drive

Essex Junction, VT 05452

Due a week from today at our Monday morning meetings.

9:55 Site Maintenance

  • I am coming around today to look at your sketchbooks this morning, with the new Jazz design by itself, and applied to a cup.
  • Please get your work in for grading on Wednesday.
  • Please notice DH 29 Envelope Study, due 1 week from today.  I will be delivering envelopes while I grade.

12:45 Cawd Diving for 2D Animators

2D Animators!  You are the only ones with specific Cawd projects this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

We are going to continue practicing the 12 principles of animation which were made famous in the mid 20th century.

What we have done / what we have to do:

  1. Squash and Stretch
  2. Anticipation
  3. Staging
  4. Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
  5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
  6. Slow In and Slow Out
  7. Arc
  8. Secondary Action
  9. Timing
  10. Exaggeration
  11. Solid drawing
  12. Appeal

First, you need to learn about each principle for this week.  Watch some videos, read some articles.  Some of these principles are elements we already use in class, some will be new, some will be your refinement of current skills.

I have included links to a great series of animations that cover the 12 principles, and I will link to 4 new each week.  You are not limited to these videos, nor do you have to look at them at all if you have your own sources, but they are great jumping off points.

This week we are going to learn about, and demonstrate:

  1. Timing
  2. Exaggeration
  3. Solid drawing
  4. Appeal

Create 4 separate animation files that visually illustrate these principles in action.  We will combine in Premiere.  In Premiere separate with titles (white text over a black screen) which separate them so the user can linearly go through your project and see what you are going to demonstrate.

All work 720p.

Call your project “finalFour.mp4” and place in your Google Drive Week 29 folder.  As this is an animation it is posted in Google Drive.

You will have Monday afternoon and Tuesday all day to complete your “Cawd Diving” for this week.  Wednesday we are going to be having a mini-design competition for my 2D Animators in Cawd, with the best animation being able to choose their seat for the 4th quarter.  2D animators will have their work displayed to the class Thursday morning at 9:45 for final evaluation.

Everyone has something to work for this week, be it juried accolades in an official design competition, or simply seat selection for the fourth quarter.

2:05 Dismissal
