Notes

  • Welcome to Week 31!
  • Game Day Friday.  Here is a pretty poor piece of pottery.  Fill it with money.  Friday before I come to school I will take all the money it has and go to Price Chopper on the way in and get whatever you crazy kids want.  The more you put in, the more we get.
  • Thursday at 10 AM Cawd is having our Web Designer Certification Exam.  We will be doing two a day Study Guides AM/PM until Thursday morning.
    • Students that are sick Thursday will take the study guide on Friday in class before relaxing, or be working to get caught to relax.
    • Two students won’t be here Thursday or Friday and have already told me, and will be taking their exam with me Wednesday Afternoon after school.  Wednesday will be Jestings, Carner, Mr. Moore and I taking their respective exams.  If you are also leaving early due to vacation/crime fighting lets talk and have you take the exam Wednesday afternoon.
  • Web Dev 5 is published early – (was scheduled to be published Wednesday the 19th, but I am pretty amazing.)

9:45 Design Homework 31 | Free Sketch

As always over vacation, your Design Homework for that week is a free design.  Take the next page if your sketchbook and create.

  • Logos
  • Stil lives
  • Hands
  • Characters
  • Layouts for a web design
  • A 3-panel comic
  • Typography
  • Organic
  • Abstract
  • Etc

I will accept pens, pencil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, Conte crayon – pretty much everything except sculpture.

(To be honest, if you want to sculpture, we can figure out a way to make that work.)

Due the Monday we return from vacation, May 1st.

Site Maintenance

  • No vocabs this week / just work on Study Guides throughout the weekend.
  • Students must have all work uploaded to relax Friday.  Nothing wrong with working Friday to get caught up, but don’t get salty when you can’t relax and have to work to get caught up first.
  • Students missing any assignments are going to be required to stay after school on Wednesday – so hopefully this solves some of the above issues before Friday.
  • Bring over Design Homework 30 when we meet this morning.
  • As always on Friday students that are not caught up in academics may be pulled by Mr. Lance / Ms. Charron / their other teachers to work and get caught up in History/Science/Etc first.  So…just get caught up in life early this week, so Friday can be relaxing, and when you return from vacation you are calm, feel good, and are fully caught up.

12:45 Week 31 Afternoon Exercise:  Floating Island

Floating Island

Over the next 4 afternoons we are going to be working on a project I am going to call “Floating Island“.  With two fairly descriptive words we are going to have the requirements pretty cut and dry:

  • The object must be an “island”
  • The object must be floating, either through natural phenomena, magic, or man-made means.

This project is going to be rooted in a “theme”.  The theme is Floating Island.  How you create this theme is up to you.  These are some options I have thought about as options:

Hand Drawing

Take the next page in your sketchbook, or a new piece of hand drawn artwork.  For students looking to expand Portfolio offerings beyone solely digital work, this may be a nice option to consider.

Digital Painting

Use Photoshop and your tablet to digitally paint a piece.

Vector Illustration

Use Photoshop or Illustrator to create a vector art piece.

3D Render

Use Maya to create a 3-dimensional world/scene.  Give the user a static render at the end with your intended view.

Interactive

Use Maya and Unreal to create a 3-dimensional world scene where interactivity and exploration is a key component to the experience.  “Playing” the Floating Island, exploring, jumping, is part of the beauty.

Maybe try out the “flying” template in Ue4 to explore the island?

Week 31 Dailies

Each day’s dailies will link to a “floatingIsland” folder inside Week 31.  Today’s progress will be called “monday.jpg”.  Tomorrow will be “tuesday.jpg”.

Each day for dailies we will show the previous day’s work.

Monday we will show Alex’s “monday.jpg”.

Tuesday we will show Alex’s “monday.jpg”, and then “tuesday.jpg”.

Etc.

The goal is we see definitive progress day by day.  This is how your dailies are graded.

Final Product

The final project will be called “floatingIslandFinal.jpg” inside of your “floatingIsland” folder.

If you choose “Interactive” we will use screen capturing software to get a video of the world exploration.

You have Monday through Thursday to work on your design.  Whichever you choose plan on 4 days of solid work, with a Study Guide each afternoon at 12:46.

12:46 Study Guide

  • When complete get back to “Floating Island” production time.
