9:50 Week 34 and the craziness of too many cooks in the kitchen:

This Friday, May 19th we are going to have everyone submit their Vermont Portfolio to the state of Vermont.  We are going to start the process today.  My goal is we are done and submitted by Thursday May 18th.

Depending on  your schedules, we are going to be working on one of two projects this week:

  • Setting up / testing / perfecting your State Portfolio
  • WordPress.com hosted site.  This will be an introduction to the WordPress interface as we move toward installing the real version of Wordpress ourselves next week.  Topic will be up to you.  We will talk more about this tomorrow (Tuesday the 16th).

This morning we are going to focus 100% on the Vermont Portfolio as we are all here, and the deadline is soon.

Vermont Portfolio

It is very important that we all listen to some major points:

  1. Don’t make a mistake when signing up for your account, take your time, I can’t undo your errors.
  2. Don’t hit submit as if you accidentally hit submit you can’t un-submit it.

Hey, you know what, those are real important, so let’s review them.

  1. Don’t make a mistake when signing up for your account, take your time, I can’t undo your errors.
  2. Don’t hit submit as if you accidentally hit submit you can’t un-submit it.

Let’s see how this goes, new for me tool!  Does anyone want to work today from the lead machine you can demonstrate to the class?  I can’t…not a student.  Give you credit for an article if you volunteer.

10:35 Class input in your final two logos

I have cut up some different post it note strips.  Go take a look at the student work at the back and stick a note on the design which you think is “better”.  What could “better” mean?

  • The more interesting design.
  • The more creative design.
  • The more complex design.
  • The more simple design.
  • The design which reflects the student the most, from what you know of them.

If you really don’t have a favorite between the two, please don’t vote.  This is not “well I have to pick one“, this is a “which is the best choice” from your point of view.

This vote should be considered, but will not control which of your final two designs going into digital production.

12:45 Week 34 Bootstrap Powered Client Work

Monday through Thursday Afternoons this week are going to be geared for “Client Work”.  We are going to use Bootstrap as our foundation as we are trying to do some quick work, for maybe around the $500 per client price point.  You get 4 or 5 clients with quick Bootstrap powered designs, you can earn as much in a single week as working all summer at your “other” job which makes you smell, is manual labor, and takes you away from your friends and social life.

Picture it…

It is June 16th.  Summer has begun.  You now have some Web Design skills and want to make some money doing design work as compared to working until midnight, smelling like fry oil, etc.

We are going to look at two Essex-based businesses which may be interested in your skills.  You will analyze what they currently have, and then create a redesign using Bootstrap as a foundation.

Students will be completing designs for two clients:

  • The Red Cover Salon
  • 5 Corners Antiques

** Students here every other day will have their topic drawn live by random at 12:45 in front the class.

Red Clover Salon

  • Current Design
  • Quick validation of homepage has two errors
  • Non-responsive

5 Corners Antiques

  • Current Design
  • Quick validation of homepage has 28 errors!  This is often a result of using a “Website Builder” as compared to employing a Designer.   Look at the “Powered by Website Builder” at the bottom.  They seem to be proud that they have created something with so many problems.  Hey, they took the clients money and are laughing now.  Let’s see if we can do better.
  • Non-responsive…but you knew that.

For each

Bootstrap is required.  Try your best to limit css editing.  The goal of Bootstrap is rapid deployment for clients / projects, NOT designing with a total blank slate.   Speed over 100% control.  Find the balance.

Do your best to replicate the “feel” of each business.  For example, if Red Clover Salon has physical signage, and an interior color scheme which matches their current online design, we can’t start using Grand Theft Auto font and Vaporwave colors.

Any media you can save from their site is legal to use.  Only use the good parts!

Bring over all their content.  You bring over 75% of their content the maximum grade you may receive is a 75%.  You bring over 150% of their content, you get a 150.  (Put your hand down, I am kidding.)

Create a folder called “clover” for Red Clover Salon work.

Create a folder called “corners” for 5 Corners Antiques work.

Remember the moral of the story is the independent application of your knowledge.  My answers will be more cryptic, pushes in the right direction versus simply answering the question.
