9:50 8 bit Photoshop vs Reality

You may have seen this posted on a lot of the blogs, but the concept is to take sprites or characters from your favorite NES game and incorporate them into RL.

Their are a few problems with this blog post.

The first and most glaring problem is that the title is ‘8-Bit vs Reality’ and their first image is from Super Street Fighter II; which we all very well know came out for the SNES. Which means that image is really ‘16-Bit vs Reality’, and lying is bad.

The second issue is that none of these images are large enough to be a background on a 27in Mac Cinema Display.

Now, down to your project. Your project is going to be making your own version of these, but at a resolution that Dr. Herr can use as a background.

Requirements

  • 2560-1440 pixels at 300 dpi
  • Must be a sprite / character from NES game or SNES game (none of that Genesis garbage)
  • Must be Awesome

Now what makes these examples so great is the fact that all of them are incorporated into their scene more that just copying and pasting them. They all use a shadow or are interacting with the 3d world some how. Whether that be splashing water or overlapping with grass.

Another key to this project is that most 8-Bit characters are view flat on from the side. This means you should find an image that allows you to incorporate your sprite from the side. I think the worst example from the blog is the SF2 image. Is just doesn’t look like the character is punching the car.

When complete, upload both the psd and png as 8bit to your week_07 folder.
