Dylan’s Photos
Bouquet
I took this photo outside of a friend’s house, near his woods. It was nearly sunset, and I like how you can clearly see the flower, but the backdrop is very blurry and out of focus. I did this with a macro lens.
In this Photo I was aiming for a shallow depth of field. I chose to not use the rule of thirds here, because in the other version of the photo, it was too shallow to make an interesting photo
out of a smaller or larger portion of the plant. The other thing I like about this photo is that it required no modifications once it was taken.
Unfolding
This photo, to me, was an experiment in creative use of the rule of thirds. Rather than aligning the flower to the two side boundaries, like you often see,
I aligned it with the bottom line. This was also shot with a macro lens as the sun was setting. Once taken, I darkened it and added an unsharp mask to bring some of the detail out.
Death Row
I like this photo a lot, and it was the second photo I took for this project. I used the default lens for my camera, which is unusual for me. At first glance
it looks like I disregarded the rule of thirds here, but if you looks closer, the left of the far left tomato and the far right of the right tomato fall along the sidelines.
Stitches
This is yet another macro photo. I thought this was very relevant to our topics, and it was a great opportunity to test the power of our macro lenses.
I liked how the depth of field was in focus on the scarecrows face, but went out of focus around where his ears would be.
Propaganda
This was a photo I actually took while learning about HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. I took this outside of our school with a default lens and a tripod.
I wanted to capture the contrast between the grain of the wood and the sky, and I think it came out well.
Hairy Pumpkin
Continuing the macro photo trend, this is a photo of a pumpkin sitting outside of one of my friend’s houses. The depth
of field is quite shallow, but I chose this photo because I liked the way it was colored and the high amount of detail in the stem.
This image was not modified after it was taken.
Dark House
This is a lighthouse outside of another friend’s house. I considered making this into an HDR image, but I felt that the colors were
better the way they are. I was aiming for a dramatic depth of field again, and ended up getting a huge amount of detail in the railing of the lighthouse.
This was also unmodified.
ZipLine
I took this photo behind our school, in some alleyway near the woods. It is an HDR image, taken with a macro lens and a tripod.
The reason I like this photo is because it got a very detailed look while still maintaining realism in HDR, unlike the other HDR photo which is more than borderline unreal.
The Winding Road
To be blunt, this photo was a complete accident. I took this without thinking when I came across this path near the school, and with a few adjustments, we have the above.
I adjusted the temperature slightly, and applied an unsharp mask to bring out the detail. I also cropped out a trailer that was barely visible up top.
Beast of Burden
This photograph, although you can’t really tell, is a wheel barrow full of hay. I saw the leaves resting in the fold of the metal, and I thought “This is a great chance to once again
test the power of my macro lens.” As though I didn’t enough. Either way, I like how this came out. It was taken without a tripod, and I darkened it slightly.

My favorite is “Death Row” I like the lighting that the window gives off. I also like how the red color pops out. -

November 9th, 2009 at 3:27 pmHi, Dylan- I’m Bob Dunn, Ryan, Taylor, and Mike’s teacher here at North Country. Wow — I am so impressed with your collection of photos. Your selections show a very thoughtful process on your part and a great talent for composition. Your choices of colors and interesting points of view add a lot of variety to your collection.
I particularly like the ‘propaganda’ pic. I like how the light and shadow adds to the story of the composition.
Beast of Burden is also one of my favs. I like the discoloration of the metal and the contrasting colors. The curve really draws me into this pic.
I think you really have a future in this kind of work. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your stuff with me today.
