  • Text Links
  • Image Links

10:00 Morning Web Exercise #1:  Links Page.

In our first exercise of the day you are going to create a page that includes 8 links to different websites on the internet.

First, create 4 links to webpages of your choice – class appropriate.  These will be text based links.

Second, create 4 links to 4 different search engine websites using images.  The images (and sites) you will use are located in today’s example folder.  Make these images go the respective search engine page.

When complete, create a folder called “linksPractice” on inside your Week 19 folder.  Upload your XHTML file, images folder, and 4 images to this folder.

Once uploaded test and check for green check mark!

10:25 Morning Web Content:

  • Creating Consistent Structure across multiple pages

10:45 Break (15 Minutes)

11:00 Morning Web Content:  Portfolio Version 2

This morning you will start incorporating links into your second version of the portfolio.  Last weeks Portfolio V1 was contained in a single page.  Today we will expand to multiple pages.

First you will make your homepage for your portfolio.  This homepage is going to be the template for your other pages.  It is going to include a large main heading, and a page title, that says “Your last name Portfolio V2″.

Underneath it you will have an unordered list with the following links:

  • home
  • Piece 1 (Replace with the name of project #1 from your first portfolio)
  • Piece 2 (Replace with the name of project #2 from your first portfolio)
  • Piece 3 (Replace with the name of project #3 from your first portfolio)
  • Piece 4 (Replace with the name of project #1 from your first portfolio)

Under this, you will put in a short bio paragraph about yourself.  One Paragraph. What school you are from, do you like to snowboard, were you born in Canada, do you have pets, etc.

One this is complete, you will then use this page as a template for the other 4 pages.  Create the other 4 pages.

Open up each page and replace your bio info with the specific info about that project.  We want to see at least 1 large pic for the image at a maximum width of 1024 pixels.  Do the resizing in Photoshop. Under this image place your unordered list about that project.  The unordered list for that project can come directly from the previous portfolio.

In your project specific unordered list, you will include an extra bullet that says “Full Sized Project”.  This text will be a link to the full sized render / image that you created.

Make sure you are storing all images in an images folder, and have a green check mark before you upload.

When complete, create a folder called “portolioV2″ and upload this project to Week 19.

12:50 Tuesday / Thursday Design Project:  “Life is Better With Art In It” Poster Competition.

Over the next two “A” day afternoons you are going to be working on a poster competition.  The competition portion is optional. This poster competition is run by the Arts Institutes family of schools.  If you do well at the local, or national level, and you decide to attend one of AI’s schools (such as AI New England that visited us this fall) you are eligible for scholarships ranging from $3000 to a full ride. Full ride = free college.

These are the general requirements for this assignment:

  • An original poster design incorporating the theme “Life Is Better With Art In It.” Poster size cannot exceed 11″ x 17″ and must be submitted in JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Student submissions should show an understanding of the theme “Life Is Better With Art In It,” basic design concepts, and a keen eye for design.
  • The poster must incorporate the words: “Life Is Better With Art In It.”
  • The poster must include The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts logos. The logos may be found in today’s example files.
  • Entries must be appropriate for promotional/marketing purposes.
  • Entries deemed vulgar or offensive will be disqualified.
  • Artwork must be original and not copied from any other published sources, including books or magazines.
  • No copyrighted, animated, or team-created work will be accepted. Entries containing copyrighted materials will be disqualified

Start with a new file in Photoshop / Illustrator that is 11 inches by 17 inches at 300 dpi.

Use any creative means at your disposal (Photoshop, Illustrator, Max, Etc) to build your design.  Limit yourself to content you create AND work from Photos.com that we own. Don’t use work that isn’t yours.  If you use stock photography you are going to have to heavily add to it to become “your work”.  Just turning in some stock photography won’t work.

Make sure to follow all the above rules including the section on including the two logos, and the theme / text requirements.

Here is a link to last years top posters, from 12th place to 1st place.

If you are going to definitely be attending an AI family of schools next week, here is a link to all the specific information you need.  You will also need to write an artists statement, and obtain a transcript.  You must email your completed project (and some other elements) to them by Friday end of the day.  Again these extra steps to enroll in the competition are only for students definitely attending AI next year and want a shot at the scholarship.

Thursday afternoon save your file as “aiPoster.jpg” amd upload to Week 19.  Note that we are looking for a single .jpg file here, this is what AI wants as a format, so for this assignment we will mimic their requirements.
