Week 19 Website Development Assignment

Class hours: 9:40am – 2:05pm
Mr. Cronin
Mr. Herr

In our first assignment for “Website Development” through our Dual Enrollment connection with the Vermont State College system, you will be creating a web page that covers the content learned in Week 1 of CAWD’s Web Design Semester.  You will find the WD assignment will use the content learned the week before in CAWD; this will be consistent throughout the semester.

WD assignments are assigned Monday morning, and due the following Saturday at midnight.  You can do the work during the week and upload before you leave on Friday, or you can work and FTP into the server from home.  I grade WD work very early Sunday mornings, please make sure your work is there.  Late projects are 1 letter grade off per week.

Create a folder inside of your current work (this week would be Week 19) called “WD”.  This assignment goes in that folder.  This same structure will continue throughout the semester.

Grading for WD will be 75% your CAWD Grade / 25% your Weekly WD assignments.

The above information will likely not appear week by week.  You are expected to know it and abide by it from now on.

Week 19 Assignment:

Technical Aspects Covered

  • Valid XHTML documents
  • Head / Body Structure
  • Headings
  • Paragraphs
  • Images
  • Lists

Theme

  • Creating your web developing environment with open source solutions.

Project:

This week you will do some research and create a web page that looks into what you would need to setup a free, open source software suite on your machine / flash drive to do web development.  You will do research, install the software, and give us your thoughts on the software you find compared to what we use in class.

You need to find open source solutions for:

  • Coding (not notepad++ as we use it in class)
  • Image Manipulation / Graphic Design
  • FTP (not FileZilla as we use it in class)

Your page will include:

  • Section by section organization, with appropriate headings and paragraphs.
    • What did you find for each category?  A minimum of 1 program for each.
    • What is the link where you downloaded the software?
    • After installation and use, what is the software like?  How does it compare to what we use in class.  This hands on practice with something outside of our class software is required.

Create an header/title image that goes on the top of your page that says “Open Source Web Development Solutions”.

Everything should be valid, your image should use an “images” folder, and all content needs to be uploaded by midnight next Saturday February 6th.
