CawdV3.1

Computer Animation and Webpage Design

Thursday, February 11th

Class hours: 9:40am – 2:05pm
Mr. Cronin
Mr. Herr

Notes

  • Today’s quiz determines if we have a game day / game afternoon / game nothing next Friday February 19th, the day before we go on vacation.
  • We are going to have an adjusted schedule today due to a visitor at 10:30, late sketch, early break, etc.
  • As I grade I have noticed some trends which are effecting student grades negatively.  To achieve the highest possible grade you don’t want to lose trivial points for the following transgressions:
    • files not named correctly
    • not turning in both formats of a project
    • files with warnings/errors in our validator
    • files uploaded without “images” folders

Example Files

9:40 Attendance and Article

9:45 Week 20 Quiz

  • Music off
  • Notes away
  • Single copy of FF open without extra tabs
  • When complete remain silent and don’t move around so everyone has a quiet testing environment

10:15 Break (15 Minutes)

10:30 Morning Web Content

  • background images
  • Id’s verses classes
  • links
  • text decoration properties
  • converting a traditional list to a nav bar.
  • index pages

11:00 Thursday / Friday Morning Web Exercise: Artist Website

Today and Friday morning you will be creating a website based on an artist, your choice. The artist can be a great historic artist such as da Vinci or Monet, or someone from more modern pop culture such as Andy Warhol. It could be someone pushing the envelope of art today, such as urban guerrilla artist Banksy, or a classic American artist such as Norman Rockwell.  Use Google to pick an artist you want to feature.

You will create a multi page website with the following theme requirements:

  1. Bio page (index.html)- this will be the index.html of your website.  Being called “index.html” it wil auto load when a user goes to this folder. You will find a bio for your artist, and copy and paste it into this page with citations. This does not need to be in your own words if you cite it!!
  2. Style of art page (style.html) – this page will be where you go over the style of the artist. If an impressionist, what does that mean? If a student of the Bauhaus movement, what does this mean? With citations!!
  3. Medium of art (medium.html) – this page will be where you discuss the artistic medium your artist chose. Did he sketch, did he use watercolor, stencils, computers, clay, etc. Give an overview of the medium he used, and how his/her art was created. With citations!!
  4. Gallery Page (gallery.html) – this final page will be a sampling of the art that your chosen artist has created. You will go online and find 6 pieces of their art, saving them to your drive. You will create a gallery page where you have 4 equal sized thumbnails of the art. On this page you will need nothing but the thumbnails.  Don’t squash/squash the image, make a fixed selection if you need to.
  5. Work 1-4 page (work1.htmlwork4.html) – these 4 pages will have full sized versions of your artwork (no larger than 1000 pixels wide). In addition to the 4 images, you need to list the title, medium, and year created.

** Gallery pages (sections 4 and 5 – total of 5 pages) need no citations.

Technical Requirements:

  • Header image created in Photoshop that goes along with your artist and theme.
  • All pages must have links to the pages #1-4. You will have a nav bar that will appear on the top of every page (directly underneath your header image) going to pages 1-4 (index.html, style.html, medium.html, gallery.html).
  • All content must live in a div which is floated in the center with a background color.
  • The body of your website must have an image background which includes a large piece of your artists artwork.
  • Use of valid xhtml, css, and images.

Here is the general site structure you will have:

When complete, create a folder called “artist” in Week 20. Upload all content into this “artist” folder.  Your bio page will be the index.html, so it will auto load when we go into the artist folder.

You will get time to work on this project tomorrow morning as well as today.

11:40 Week 20 Sketching Content:  Asimo.

Asimo is part of Honda’s Research and Development.  It is a humanoid based robot, it has been “done” a lot of things during its existance including meeting the Queen of England and being controlled by brain waves.

Today we will sketch Asimo happily walking toward us.  You could also interpret the picture as Asimo coming to get you; look past its gentle wave to its other hand clenched in a fist of robot rage. This is the problem with Robots.  They don’t always follow the “Rules of Robotics“.

Regardless, sketch this image of Asimo.

When you start your sketch, rotate your paper so that it a portrait, matching up with the content. We want you to try to fill the entire page with Asimo.  I will not be grading sketches with the alignment of the paper as landscape.

Here is Asimo:

When complete sign and date your sketch and place on the back table.

Put art supplies away, and work on something CAWD related until we go to lunch.  Work.

12:50 Afternoon Web Project: Self Directed Website.

This afternoon you are going to create a short 3 page website that practices much of what we have covered in the last couple of days.  While the content matters, we care more about you successfully setting up the structure and practicing. Don’t get hung up on content for 20-25 minutes, pick a topic and go.

Requirements:

  • Heading / Graphic / Nav with consistent structure for all pages
  • 3 page setup
  • horizontal nav bar
  • All content placed in centered div
  • Content displayed with appropriate paragraphs, headings, and images.
  • Must use citations to where you found information for your site. Content that isn’t cited that sounds like you didn’t write it will hurt your grade.

I have heard from *some* students that in another class (Maybe English?) you were going to make a website.  Whenever you use work from CAWD (website, animations, graphic design, etc) in other classes as projects, you will get EXTRA CREDIT in CAWD. All you have to do is have your teacher email me saying the project was used.

Create a folder called “thursdaySelf” and upload all content to this folder. Make sure to include:

  • html files
  • image folder and images
  • css folder and images
