9:45 Lockdown Locks / Lights / Out of Sight
This morning we are going to practice the “Secure The Building” procedure. We *hopefully* will never have to do this in reality, but we will drill on this throughout the year along with Fire Drills.
This morning we are going to have two presentations leading up to break. We have different parts of CTE that want to meet you and tell you some important information.
First, the CTE Administration
The CTE Administration is going to come in today and do a short introductory “Hello!” presentation to us. Please be a good audience, and ask any question that comes up.
Second, Emmy, our Cawd Guidance Counselor
Emmy is the gatekeeper to many different opportunities at CTE. You will work directly with Emmy on:
- scheduling high school classes you want
- signing up for college courses through CTE / Cawd
- signing up for college courses on your own
- finding the college for you / paying for college
- someone to talk to that will simply listen
When both presentations are complete, we are going to have the remainder of the AM until break for production time. Be working on something Cawd related. Or maybe…study for our first quiz that happens at 11!
10:45 Break (15 Minutes)
11:00 Week 2 Quiz
While Cawd is going to leverage the importance and advantages of “hands-on” education, it would be naive to tell you that the ideas of memorization of baseline facts has no value. In the real world you not only need to be able to do “things” (build a game, create an app, etc) but you need to be able to talk shop with other professionals.
When you are in a client meeting, being interviewed for a position, or simply around the water cooler – you must have a working knowledge of industry vocabulary and workflow.
Which applicant will get the job?
“I sent the client the big file to look at. The one with the extra stuff, you know? I didn’t know it would take up so long to download. Did the like it? Oh, they couldn’t open it…uhh.”
~ or ~
“I sent the client a .jpg version of the layout. They didn’t need to edit the .psd, so I just sent them the smaller .jpg to get approval on before we move to the phase of the development.”
Your professional brand is something we are going to talk about a lot this year and work on. It is YOUR job to cultivate and tend your brand, your outward appearance. It very “teacher” of me to talk about your abstract future, but this applies to Cawd as well. In our group projects, do you want to be known as the solid citizen that works hard and is knowledgeable, the in-demand partner? Or do you are you happy with being the bump-on-the-log partner that nobody wants to work with.
Cawd doesn’t care about height, gender, how much you bench, lisp, limp, your home life, etc. We ALL can meet the standard.

11:30 Friday Morning Sketching Content: Baseline Still Life
As we spoke of last week, we are going to have a sub-focus on 3 types of traditional artistic pieces:
- Still Life
- Perspective Drawing
The first part of the process is to get a baseline on what you can do now. We are going to create a sketch of each theme as a reference. At the end of the year we will compare what you create in September to what you create in June, and will see the growth.
It is the growth which is important. Colleges / Employers want to see you can learn and grow.
This creates two systems of success for you to leverage to the next phase of your life.
- Solid work (most of you) – simple, cut and dry.
- “Meh” work (some of you / it’s just a fact) – but with growth from pretty low qual work as a start, to “meh”.
Today we will work on part 1 – Still Life. I have given you a prompt of headphones as they are right in front of you, but you can draw anything you wish, but the focus is on a single, or small grouping of elements. I don’t want to see a fleshed out environment, I want to see object(s) on a surface. Use a reference image found online, draw your mouse, iMac, etc.
You are welcome to follow an youtube tutorial if you wish. Headphones can be put on after you submit your quiz.
Grab art supplies now – we can’t leave out seats, and the room must be silent until 12:10.
You will sign and date in the bottom right corner, and you will place on the back table before lunch. (From a technical perspective you can turn this in all the way until next Wednesday at 3pm if you want to take it home and perfect it.)
