11:00 Design the Band – Mission Statement & Style Guide
We as a class will be choosing a band that is not so well known, and “help” them to create apparel, graphics, and an online image over the next 2-3 weeks. We will be chipping away at these in a specific order. During our research time, we need to garner enough information about the band to design their image from the ground up. We’ll use this time to watch videos of the group, listen to their music, and research any existing content that may already exist.
We will be creating all the content like their Website, social media, posters, brochures, business cards, CDs, apparel, photography, mission statement, style guide, etc. We will have full creative freedom for this sort of client work.
I want all of you to find a band that is not so popular. A band that not too many people know, and also may not have a lot of existing design content.
For this project you may use Illustrator, Photoshop and inDesign. I just want to make sure you are all using the right program for the right job. You will most likely end up using all three.
Today we are going to focus on the Mission Statement and Style guide for our bands of choice. First let’s focus on Mission Statement.
What is a Mission Statement?
A mission statement is a short statement of why an organization exists, what its overall goal is, identifying the goal of its operations: what kind of product or service it provides, its primary customers or market, and its geographical region of operation.
A Mission Statement is a literal short statement that identifies the overall organizations goal. In this case, we are working with bands. So something for a band like U2 would be “To provide family friendly rock and roll to the entire world, while also providing and aiding in healthy living for all children, families and species on this earth.”
I ask that you write this Mission Statement down in a Google Doc. As I will be asking you to add your mission statement somewhere in your Style Guide.
A Style guide is a document that tells the designer what they CAN and CANNOT do. These are insanely helpful when you are working in a big team, or passing along design content to another designer. Having the Logo specifics, color pallets, typography and more all in one document, is a designers hand book. Check out Nasa’s old style guide (1976) and newer style guide (2010) that I am currently in love with.
As this is our Day 1 for this project, we may not have every piece to our style guide. Mainly I can think of the Logo. The Logo may be something we want to create now or during the process as the design gets going. This is ok. Let’s build a space for our Logo to go, where we will define the do’s and don’ts.
In our style guides we need to define:
- Mission Statement
- Logo Do’s and Don’ts
- Color Pallet
- Typography (Headers, Sub Head, Body Copy, more)
- Imagery and Photography
- The usage of all these components
You are not simply telling me all these things. You are designing them into a guide where we or the band can see the visual representations of Do’s and Don’ts.
Above example shows a clean Logo and Color Variations sheet. Your guide may be a one sheet 8.5 x 11 document. Some may be multi page. This is up to you as long as it gets all your components across.
When complete, please upload as bandStyleGuide.jpg to your week_26 folder. AND please triple check that your Missions Statement is in your guide for grading on both.
