Xcode App Store Download HERE (You may need to create an itunes account if you do not have one)
This morning we are going to dive deeper into mobile app development. We will be using a couple programs to help us along the way, trying to limit the amount of coding done ourselves. We will be using two programs called Balsamiq and Xcode. More on those below.
First, we need a basic understanding of what kind of apps are out there. There are three key types of apps. Native apps, Web apps, and Hybrid Apps. Let’s check out a quick 5 minute video to get a better understanding of what those three are.
We will be making Native Apps technically, but again up to you on what you want to do with the packaged app.
We are going to start a partner based project where the two of you are going to come up with an app idea. We are going to take that app idea and make it into a wireframe. From there, into a real app. But first, we need to come up with the idea and show what we would plan for a client.

- Judah / Victor
- Eric L. / Cam L.
Below you will see a couple of App types, you may choose one of the three. From there, you will decide what your app purpose is.
Social / Profile App:
Social app is going to be any sort of app that primarily focuses on a individuals “profile” page. Though the main focus of a social app is interaction, we can also make it individual for the user, or mainly focus on the profile and activities that individual is doing.
This app type focuses on one’s health and physical activity. One of the big requirements for this app type GPS integration. Some basic ideas for this app type is Bike app, running app, fitbit connected app.
Food and Drink app:
Food and Drink apps generally revolve around one’s eating habits. This could be something like a food tracker, a diet app, or even a restaurants app. Something like Tasty.
Balsamiq is a nice wireframing program that is FREE… for now. We will be using this today to rough out our home page and one other page. You must create the ENTIRE page. Not just what fits in the first bit of the screen.
When complete, upload as wireframe.jpg to your week_6 folder.

12:45 Building your App with XCode
Everyone is going to get to this point at different times. I am providing you with all the materials and resources you would need to start your first page for your app.
XCode is an App Dev tool that makes it easy for people who have never used code before, be able to build simple apps. It’s also robust enough to do some hard code to make your app even better.
Below is a series of videos that will take you from zero to hero. Focus on the first 3 videos to get your app rolling.
This is a different teaching technique that I don’t use very often. We will be going deeper into XCode as a group tomorrow. But for today, I want to see how far you can get on your own. This shows individual drive, problem solving, and teamwork.
