It’s the beginning of September, and the start of the new academic year. Now that we are all settling down for a new school year I wanted to update everyone on the happenings of the past summer.
First, news from the Kansas City field trip.
I’m going to just start off with the great news before the story that was KC. Devin and Dylan competed in the 3d Visualization and Animation contest and placed 6th! Our best ever finish at nationals in 3d. Not to be outdone Anna and Emily placed 5th in the nation in this years Web Design contest. Katelyn’s leaping bass Vermont pin placed 14th out of 40+ competitors. Finally Ashley competed with other students from CTE in Quizbowl and placed in the top 50%.
Now onto what actually happened in KC. We all headed out on Monday around 6 am from BTV. Cronin and I were on a different flight that left an hour after the students. Anna, Ashley, Devin, Dylan, Emily and Katelyn’s flight was delayed over 3 hours so they actually didn’t arrive until after us. When everyone was finally at the hotel we spent the rest of the day walking to get food at panera and playing football or swimming.
Tuesday we went to contest meetings and spent the night studying for web design which would happen the next morning. While studying we ordered some pizza and Ashley made a new friend while we waited.
Wednesday morning web design started their competition and the rest of us wandered around the convention center trading pins and looking at the competitions that were happening.
Wednesday night was the opening ceremonies featuring Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs. He spoke about all of the students that go to college without a reason just because they are supposed to and how the students at SkillsUSA were going to be so better off with an actual career and training under their belt.
On Thursday the 3d and Pin Design contests took place. The 3d contest was given a storyboard and nothing else and told to model and animate the entire scene.
Watch the finished video below (Note it’s not in HD due to the contest guidelines and render limitations at contest):
After everyone was finished competing we decided to go out and celebrate at Oklahoma Joe’s.
When everyone was finished eating at OK Joe’s (especially Dylan) we took a walk to a mall and got Ice Cream. While eating ice cream outside there was a pretty amazing sunset and lightning storm.
Friday was a pretty relaxed day before closing ceremonies that night. We all went shopping ate sushi or went to Chipotle.
After eating lunch some of us went to the Apple store. While at the Apple store some of may even have spilled their root beer every where. When this happened their chaperone may have walked to the other side of the store to distance themselves from the embarrassment.
Overall it was a really good fieldtrip, extremely successful and a lot of fun. I can’t wait to take some (and not some) of the returning students back there this coming summer.
PS. I was told I had to include this photo to get the other photos used in this post from some one.
